Workmen for Christ
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” This verse from 2 Timothy 2:15 is the theme of Workmen For Christ (WFC), a young men’s ministry of GVCC with the primary purpose of providing service to the church and local community.
The group was established in 1997 by Evan Mathew “as he envisioned the future of the church and especially calling up young men to serve,” states Benjamin Bimson, the current co-leader of WFC. After returning from living and working in the Bay Area for a few years, Evan saw a need for young men to serve the church community by learning to look outside of themselves. The small group began aiding in landscaping and special projects on church grounds, helping people move, and providing set up and clean up service at the Davis Farmer’s Market and other special events. According to Evan, his goal for the group was ” to serve, fellowship, and grow in the Lord.”
Initially meant for college-aged men and young professionals, the group has since cast a wider net by including high school boys. Brian Killeen, co-leader of the group, says this has served “to foster fellowship between men of different ages in the church. Through monthly meetings and working together, the men are able to build each other up in Christ, pray for each other, and pass along practical life skills that will benefit the Christian community.”
The years of faithful service done by the group has been a testimony to the community, with people often commenting to Evan: “You guys are a blessing.” The hard work of WFC volunteers has also not gone unnoticed by the Davis Farmer’s Market, who presented “The Dedication in Action Award” to GVCC at their 35th Anniversary celebration in 2011.
At a recent WFC annual barbeque, Evan encouraged the men that they have been “saved to serve.” Thus, group leaders strive to continue calling up generations of young men to this honorable mission of being a workman approved by God, correctly handling the word of truth.
