What Is Real, Saving Grace?

It is not money or fame or power that we need. It is grace.

What is grace? The basic meaning of grace is that it is free.

That which is most costly is given free to God’s elect.

What is most costly? Salvation, eternal life. God created the universe by fiat, by his word. But to save us, God sent his Son to become incarnate. When Jesus became man, that was humiliation for him, and he died the death of the cross to accomplish our redemption.

Romans 6:23 tells us that “the wages of sin is death.” All people have sinned, and all deserve eternal death in hell. God’s ultimate grace is that sinners, who merited hell, are brought to heaven. That is why the songwriter called it “Amazing Grace.” By grace, the guilty are justified. By grace, all our sins are forgiven. By grace, we repent and believe. By grace we live, and by grace we die. By grace, we love God and obey his commands joyfully throughout all of life. It is all by grace—incomparably great grace that will be celebrated throughout eternity.

The chief end of man is to glorify God by grace and enjoy him forever. We are not saved so we can use God for our own health, wealth, and fame. We are saved to serve. By grace, we work hard to please the Giver of all grace.

Don’t presume! Suppose someone calls himself a Christian but doesn’t obey God—he remains self-centered and doesn’t read the Bible or pray or serve or help others. That man is graceless and must repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ; otherwise, in due time, God will cut him down.

Do you see evidence of God’s grace in your life?

Pastor P. G. Mathew’s sermon, “Grace Does Good Works” provides a deeper exploration into God’s grace, which saves us and enables us to obey God in doing good works. Click HERE to read it now.
