GVCC to host “Reformation Day” on October 31st
October 31 is a very important day in Christian history. This date is commonly referred to as “Reformation Day.” It commemorates the day in 1517 when Martin Luther boldly nailed his 95 Theses on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. This event helped spark the Protestant Reformation.
Luther was a Catholic monk who, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and serious study of the Bible, was convinced that many of the practices and beliefs of the Roman Church were contrary to the Bible. For example, the Church taught that a living person could pay money to release the souls of a deceased person from purgatory. Luther argued that this idea was not found in the Bible, and the practice was merely used to fatten the pocketbooks of church clergy. The posting of Luther’s 95 Theses caused a great uproar throughout Europe. Luther’s insistence that salvation was granted by God through faith alone, rather than by faith and good works, was revolutionary in the lives of many people.
In honor of the Protestant Reformation and how it has impacted our lives today, GVCC is hosting its annual Reformation Day celebration. This year’s event will take place on Wednesday, October 31, at 6PM. The evening will begin with a program in the sanctuary, and culminate with events in the gym. Last year, we enjoyed a puppet show about the prodigal son, and this year we look forward to a puppet show about Joseph in Egypt. Children’s activities in the gym will include scooter races, face painting, balloon making, bowling, fishing and other types of games. Participants will be able to take home a small bag of candy. Tasty homemade desserts will also be offered. The cost is $2 per child or $5 per family. We hope to see you and your family there!
